Since September 2005 I have been working as an associate lecturer at the University of Derby Buxton campus. I work in the key skills group teaching Application of Number. I teach several groups of learners at the university and contribute to the work of the key skills group by developing resources and planning tools. Prior to 2005 I worked for 12 years as an electronics engineer, the last five for Philips Semiconductors (now NXP).
At NXP I worked as a product measurement and test engineer in the PowerMOS development group. My primary responsibilities were the electrical assessment of new products and authoring of data sheets. I used a wide range of electrical test and measurement equipment and programmed automatic test systems. I collated and analysed measurement data, produced technical reports both for internal use and in response to customer requests. I also designed and built new pieces of test equipment. As well as technical competence this work demanded good organisational and communication skills; it involved working closely with staff in many departments, quality, marketing, applications and technical documentation. Most recently I worked as part of a team developing and implementing a new Internet based product information system. Software that I regularly used included; Framemaker, Illustrator, MS office (emphasis on Excel) and Cadstar.
From October 1997 until joining Philips I worked for Advant Ltd, a computer system maintenance company. My duties included component level repair of servers and peripherals including: switched-mode power supplies, terminals, PCs, printers and tape drives. I also installed and administered a service parts stock control system.
Prior to joining Advant I worked as an electronics test and development engineer for Akusta IFE Ltd., now Federal Signal who design and manufacture a range of communication and warning systems for use in hazardous environments. My duties included; system and component level fault finding and debugging, prototype development, digital and analogue circuit design. I produced schematic diagrams and PCB layouts using ORCAD. I also gained experience of commissioning large-scale digital communication, alarm and public address systems including 6 weeks in Saudi Arabia.Between April 1994 and November 1995 I worked in a product design company, Eden Group Ltd, developing portable computing and communication products. Eden produced reference designs for customers including Amstrad, Compaq, Acer and Hitachi. Mostly providing support for the hardware design team, I built and tested prototype products all of which featured high density, multi-layer and surface mount technologies.
After completing my HND in electronic engineering I worked as a test technician for GenRad Ltd. My duties included fault finding to component level a range of digital and analogue products including; hi-fi audio amplifiers, automotive diagnostic systems and industrial battery charging equipment. I was also responsible for designing and constructing test fixtures and authoring test procedures and other documentation. I left GenRad to join Eden Group in order to gain experience of electronics design.
Before embarking on a career in electronic engineering I worked as a musician and recording engineer. I founded two obscure late '70s 'alternative rock' groups in Manchester, operated my own sound recording studio and part managed a small record label.
Personal Details and Interests
I am 48 years old and live in Buxton, Derbyshire with my partner and our two teenage children. I have a full driving license and current passport. I enjoy listening to music and am a keen amateur musician. Some of my other interests include; vegan cookery, personal computing - digital audio applications, (Soundforge 7, Cakewalk 9, Cool Edit 2, Reason 2.5), digital image applications (photoshop, illustrator) and also playing with web-site design.
